New tricks for an old dog It would be a huge overstatement if I claimed to completely understand the Internet capability to deliver coverage of various sports events. I have had the opportunity to describe high school sports via the Internet. Even though I don’t really understand the process, I welcome the chance to cover the events. One down, two to go We are smack dab in the middle of the busy Wyoming high school tournament season after the completion over the weekend of the State Wrestling Tournament. Next up is the small-school basketball tournament this week and then the big-school tourney the following week. The Casper Events Center will again be the venue for the championship contests in all three tournaments. It’s tournament time This week ushers in one of my favorite times of the year … it’s high school tournament time in Casper. It begins on Friday with the State Wrestling Championships that will run through Saturday night. That’s followed by the Class 1A and 2A State Basketball Tournament on March 4-6, and then the Class 3A and 4A State Basketball on March 11-13. T-Birds a great alternative It has been difficult to be an excited follower of Wyoming Cowboys basketball this season. The Pokes have been suffering through a lengthy losing streak and there have been very few bright spots for UW fans to rally around. Can you see the light? Can you see the light? … As in, “Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel?" That seems to be an appropriate question in connection with the Wyoming Cowboys basketball program. Wyoming’s wrestling revival The University of Wyoming’s wrestling program under second-year coach Mark Branch continues to show improvement. Last weekend was evidence to the excitement about college wrestling at UW with a record crowd of over 2,500 on hand at the Arena-Auditorium for the Cowboys’ duel against Oklahoma State. Love those NFL playoffs It is my hope that you have enjoyed the NFL post-season playoffs as much as I have. There have been some memorable moments in the playoffs and some real disappointments as well. Casper is challenged Make no mistake about it. The Casper community is facing a real challenge from Laramie for the honor of hosting the future high school athletic culminating events. Over the past several years, Casper has enjoyed playing host to the high school tournaments, including state volleyball, wrestling, basketball and track. And the community has done a very good job of playing host to those events. Which way, Cowboys? The Mountain West Conference basketball season got underway last week and the Wyoming Cowboys got started on the wrong foot as the result of a 10-point home-court loss to Colorado State. The Cowboys just never were able to assert themselves against the smaller Rams and at the end of the evening it was CSU 83, Wyoming 73. What will 2010 bring? With the dawn of the new year, it seems appropriate to consider what 2010 will bring to our Wyoming sports scene. Most immediately we get the Wyoming Cowboys launching their Mountain West Conference basketball season tonight when Colorado State comes to the Arena-Auditorium in Laramie. It is always a good thing to open conference play on the home court and the Cowboys need every advantage possible after an inconclusive early-season schedule. Good for the Mountain West So far, the college football bowl season has been very rewarding to the Mountain West Conference. Wyoming got things started with that exciting win over Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl and that was followed by an impressive, overpowering victory over Oregon State and then Utah trounced California…so that’s two wins over Pac Ten opponents over the span of a week. Our Pokes prevail Wyoming emerged from last Saturday’s New Mexico game as a huge winner. Not only did our Cowboys outlast favored Fresno State, 35-28 in double overtime, but the Wyoming contingent on hand in Albuquerque far overshadowed the Fresno State folks. Shootout revisited As usual, the annual Wyoming Shootout basketball doubleheader was a lot of fun. Saturday’s games at the Casper Events Center were entertaining and that has been the theme of this series since it started back in the early 80s n shortly after the arena was opened.
