Special Olympics receives $25,000 Walmart grant

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 5:01 PM MST

Special Olympics Wyoming release

Special Olympics Wyoming is the beneficiary of a $25,000 grant from Walmart Stores, Inc. The grant is being awarded through Walmart’s State Giving program, where managers and other associates from across the state evaluate applications and determine the gifts. This marks the second year this grant has been awarded to Special Olympics Wyoming from Walmart.

“What a great opportunity Walmart continues to give Special Olympics Wyoming!” says Priscilla Dowse, president & CEO of Special Olympics Wyoming. “As an organization we are focused on reaching out to more children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This grant from Walmart directly supports the participation of current athletes with a goal to grow another 10 percent, the implementation of our Young Athlete Program, and bringing sports experiences to 2- to 7-year-olds and allowing the movement to work with young leaders to change attitudes and perceptions of individuals with intellectual disabilities.”

Special Olympics Wyoming believes that ever-growing participation improves the experiences for all participants and the communities they represent and the youth are the greatest agents of change. Youth will carry the organization into the future, they have the unique ability to change attitudes, create new and innovative opportunities and infuse a tremendous amount of energy into the movement.

"Walmart knows how important Special Olympics is to Wyoming’s athletes and their families across the state," says Joshua Pair, senior manager for Public Affairs and Government Relations in Wyoming. "We are very proud to be involved with an organization so vital to local communities."

Special Olympics Wyoming provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in 15 sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This sports program provides opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and share friendships with other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
