Fort Caspar presents “Adventure on the Plains”
Students from kindergarten to fifth grade are invited to spring in to the past with “Adventure on the Plains” at Fort Caspar Museum from Tuesday, March 10, through Friday, March 13, from 2-3 p.m.
“It’s a great opportunity for families to do something fun and educational during the week of spring break,” said Curator of Education Erin Rose said. “This is the second annual ‘Adventure on the Plains.’ Last year’s events were so much fun and well attended so we wanted to do it again in 2009.”
The March 10 program features an important animal in Wyoming history, the beaver. Youth will explore all the basics of being a beaver. Then they will create a beaver puppet to take home.
On March 11, students will play with old-fashioned toys and make one too. On March 12, they will learn about wind in Wyoming, conduct experiments and make pinwheels.
On March 13, youth will explore the history of communication in Wyoming, from the Pony Express to the telegraph to the telephone and more.
All participating children must be accompanied by an adult. Programs are free with admission. Adults are $1.50, youth 13-18 are $1 and children 12 and under are free.

LWV plans annual meeting
The Casper League of Women Voters holds its annual meeting on Saturday, March 7, at noon at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1150 N. Poplar St.
The meeting will feature a luncheon, business meeting and a talk given by the Wyoming league lobbyist in the Legislature, Marguerite Herman.
The public is invited to attend.
According to local league President P. Jaye Rippley, “The annual meeting is where we discuss program planning for the next year. We elect new leadership, look at resolutions to take to the State Convention and consider nominating someone for the State Making Democracy Work Award.”
The league is slated to select a new president, vice president and secretary.
The featured speaker at this meeting will be Marguerite Herman, the state league’s Cheyenne lobbyist. She will speak on activity at the recently completed session of the Legislature.
Herman has been covering the Wyoming Legislature as a journalist and/or lobbyist for 28 years. She obtained a BA from Colorado College, an MAT from the University of Chicago and an MA in journalism from the University of South Carolina.
Those who wish to eat will be choosing off the menu, but the hotel needs a head count. Call Jacque Warburton at 265-6569 by March 4 if you plan on eating.

Humane Society hosts vaccination clinic
A low-cost vaccination clinic will be conducted on Wednesday, March 4, from 5n7 p.m. at the Casper Humane Society. The public is invited to bring their cats and dogs to the shelter for this clinic.
Rabies and distemper combo shots will be offered for dogs and cats. The cost is $10 for each shot administered; however, the vaccine combo for cats that includes the feline leukemia vaccine costs $20. The shots will be given by Dr. Don Cobb.
Pet owners are asked to have their animals restrained either with a leash or in a pet carrier. No appointment is needed.
City licenses also can be purchased at this time. These cost $5 for pets that are spayed or neutered and $25 for those which are not.
The Casper Humane Society is located at 849 E. E St., on the frontage road between Center and McKinley streets.

Group plans breast cancer research fundraiser
The Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star has selected breast cancer research as its major charity for 2008-09.
In order to raise funds to help in finding a cure for this cause, the organization will be holding the Starlight Ball on March 7 at Casper’s Ramkota Inn.
This formal event includes dinner, silent and live auctions and dancing. Tickets are $40 each, or a table of eight can be reserved for $320.
Businesses wishing to purchase a table or donate items for the auctions may call Shirley or Michael Trimmer at 232-8726 to make arrangements. Anyone wishing to purchase tickets also should call the Trimmers.
Hospice spring volunteer training scheduled
Central Wyoming Hospice & Transitions will hold its next volunteer training beginning April 2.
The classes will be held each Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m. through May 7 in the conference room at Central Wyoming Hospice, 319 S. Wilson.
There is no cost or obligation.
Certified volunteers assist Hospice and Transitions clients with respite care, light housekeeping, errands and companionship.
Volunteers also are needed for a variety fundraising and administrative duties, and must be 18 years or older.
Class size is limited and pre-registration is required.

Boys & Girls Clubs offer military families free memberships
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming (BGCCW) will honor each branch of the military by offering children of reserve, guard and active duty families free membership to the local clubs in Natrona and Converse counties.
BGCCW invites parents and guardians to visit one of the seven club branches in Mills, Evansville, Casper, Glenrock and Douglas.
BGCCW provides supervised programming by trained development professionals. The clubs serve a healthy afternoon snack each day and the Casper Greater Branch serves a USDA-approved meal nightly.

Ballroom dancing class offered at Casper College
A four-week class on ballroom dancing will be offered at Casper College each Sunday, March 8 through 29, from 6:15-8 p.m. in the Roberts Commons Ballroom.
“Ballroom Dance” (CMSV 0041 70) will be taught by Casper dance instructor Machelle Holloway.
According to Holloway, students will learn the waltz, foxtrot and jitterbug.

Meat sale benefits college
The Casper College agriculture department is meat from market steers and hogs.
Steers can be purchased as whole, half or quarter, and hogs can be purchased whole or half.
All money raised from the sale will go back to the agriculture department for the purchase of more livestock.
The cost per pound is $1 for steers and 70 cents for hogs. The live animal is purchased from the agriculture department, which then will deliver the animal to Kompac Meat Processing.
In addition to the cost of the animal, buyers also are required to pay processing fees.

Kiwanis plan pancake festival
Kiwanis volunteers will hold their 55th Annual Kiwanis Pancake Festival on Saturday, March 7, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and children, and includes all the pancakes you can eat with eggs, sausage, juice and coffee at Casper College’s Roberts Commons Cafeteria.
Tickets may be purchased early from any Kiwanis member or at the door. All proceeds help support the many projects of your local Kiwanis.

Health Department offering “Ten Moons Rising”
The Casper-Natrona County Health Department invites new and expecting parents to attend “Ten Moons Rising,” a series of information sessions and activities designed to support moms and dads.
This program is intended to help participants adjust to early pregnancy, prepare for the birthing process and provide answers to questions that arise after the birth of the baby.
All pregnant moms are welcome and encouraged to participate.
“Ten Moons Rising” is presented in series of three sessions on Wednesdays from March 4-18 from 2-4 p.m. The program is provided at a cost of $5 per session, with scholarships available.

Early Head Start taking applications
Early Head Start, a United Way Agency serving pregnant women and children ages birth to 3, is accepting applications currently for openings.
Three programs are offered: a home-based option with weekly home visits and twice a month Discovery Groups; a 2:2 option with two home visits a month and twice a week Discovery Groups; and a 2:2 option with wraparound child care that accepts DFS.
Applications can be sent or picked up at 4981 Buick St. in Mills, or at the Life Steps Campus.

Hospice plans support group
An eight-week bereavement support group, offered by Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions, will begin meeting Tuesday, March 17, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the conference room at Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions.
This group is offered free of charge and is open to anyone in the community who has suffered a loss.

Even Start enrolling new participants
Even Start, which provides opportunities for parents to fulfill their educational goals by offering Adult Basic Education/GED and English as a Second Language classes.
The facility is located on the Life Steps Campus, 1514 E. 12th St., Building E, Suite B1, Casper 82601.
Also Free Childhood Education classes are offered for children ages 0-7 while the parents attend classes. This program provides learning experiences and instruction through play and exploration.
Individualized attention and activities are provided for younger children ages birth to 3 years.
The Even Start philosophy is that parents are the children’s first teachers and that children learn best when they are interacting with their parents.
PACT (Parent and Child Together) allows time for parents and children to play and learn together. It provides opportunities for the parents to gain confidence in their skills as parents and as a teacher to their children through parenting education classes.

Orders being taken for seedling trees, shrubs
Seedling trees and shrubs for use as windbreaks and wildlife habitat enhancement are for sale from the UW-Natrona County Cooperative Extension Service.
There are 37 species available. The costs are $53 for 50; $57 for 30 large potted, and $42 for 30 small potted plants.
The shrubs and trees are scheduled for delivery in May. Order forms are available at the Ag Resource & Learning Center at 2011 Fairgrounds Road.

Jaycees hoping to start Casper club
The Wyoming Jaycees would like to start a club in Casper.
The organization currently is looking for people ages 18 to 41 to become members.

Quilt raffles benefit Central Wyoming Hospice
Each year, dozens of quilts are donated to Central Wyoming Hospice & Transitions by area quilters.
While many of these quilts are raffled during the annual Family Fun Fest, others, which are especially exquisite, have been set aside to be raffled throughout the year.
Raffle tickets are available now for a heart-themed quilt to be given away Feb. 27. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and are available at Central Wyoming Hospice, 319 S. Wilson, and at Kalico Kat Quilt Shop, 350 W. Collins.
All proceeds benefit the CWHTP building fund.
