What to do when you’re stumped

Have you ever had a question you should know the answer to, but can’t remember?
A few weeks ago I was hanging insulation and needed to know the length of one side of my attic roof. From my vague memories of geometry class years ago, I thought I could figure out that length without having to crawl across the rafters, but alas, I didn’t have any old math books lying around to look it up!
Whether the last time you did “homework” was five minutes or 50 years ago, you probably remember a time when you knew the answer was out there, but weren’t able to find it.
That frustration is felt by many students in Natrona County each day. Some of them struggle to maintain passing grades. Some are honor students. Some are learning English as a second language, and some are adults continuing or completing their education.
Often the questions that stump students arise at times when a parent or teacher is not available to help. Since August, many students have discovered a new tool offered by Natrona County Public Library: a free online tutoring service called “Live Homework Help,” powered by tutor.com.
Professional tutors help students in grades 4-12, and those taking AP classes or basic college-level courses as well. Available subjects fall into the categories of math, science, English and social studies.
Here are just a few of the responses we’ve received from students who have accessed Live Homework Help in the past few months:
“I'm glad I got the help I got from my tutor. I understand the assignment much more.” -- 6th grader
“Thank you so much! I was having such a hard time with my English homework on a problem and now I am thrilled because I can finish my homework before the night is over for my honors class tomorrow! Thank you!!!” -- 10th grader
“This makes homework funnn (sic)” -- 4th grader
“Steve B. is an amazing tutor, he makes it fun, and I felt okay for asking for help for once because he made me feel like it was ok to not understand something. HE'S GREAT!!!!” -- 10th grader
“My tutor helped me with my homework without just giving me the answer and making me figure out how she got it. She made me work through it. It was very helpful ... Thank You” -- 11th grader
And my personal favorite: an eighth grader who wrote simply, “KOOOOOOOL!”
Parents also have found Live Homework Help to be a great asset when they are unable to answer their children’s homework questions. Local tutors are even using the service when a student’s question is in an area of expertise different than their own.
To access this “KOOOOOOOL” service, students (or parents, teachers or tutors) can visit the library’s Web site, www.natronacountylibrary.org, from any computer with Internet access, and connect using their library card number.
Live Homework Help is available from 3-9 p.m. every day, and “en Espaņol” Sunday through Thursday from 3-8 p.m.
